A skate park within the Fraser-Cascade School District is getting a boost.

During their most recent meeting, the SD78 board of trustees passed a motion to allocate $10,000 from the Allen Porter Bequest toward the Yale Skateboard Park.

The school district recently announced a $40,000 bequest from the late SD78 teacher to be given for a variety of cultural activities in schools across the District of Kent and beyond.

Porter was a former teacher at Yale Elementary School in the Hope area, which shut down in 2006; he served in the district for 24 years. Porter’s estate has already funded a number of cultural projects, including a grand piano at Agassiz Elementary Secondary School, a garden program in Boston Bar and a theatre workshop at Harrison Hot Springs Elementary School.

The Fraser-Cascade School District is accepting additional submissions from schools until the $40,000 is entirely spent.

In other school board business, the trustees approved a motion to support a student-led Relay for Life event in May with assistance of setup, takedown and other logistics.

The next SD78 school board meeting is Tuesday, May 14, at 7 p.m. via Zoom. The Zoom address and other information are available on each meeting’s agenda. To learn more, visit sd78.bc.ca.
