An Abbotsford dentist has been suspended from practice for a year for what the BC College of Oral Health Professionals has deemed professional misconduct.
The suspension for Dr. Kyle Nawrot is in effect from Oct. 1, 2023 to Sept. 30, 2024. He must also pay a $6,000 fine and $4,000 to the college towards the cost of the investigation.
During his suspension, Nawrot cannot be involved in any patient care, but is permitted to handle administrative and financial tasks related to his dental practice.
Nawrot’s disciplinary hearing was scheduled to take place from Sept. 25 to 29 and Oct. 3 to 6, but the hearing was cancelled after he admitted to certain acts and made a proposal for resolution, which the college accepted.
The public notice posted Sept. 25 on the college’s website indicates that Nawrot admitted that he:
• failed to respond to communications from the college in a timely manner;
• provided extensive restorative treatment in a single session rather than multiple sessions and performed treatments “that were not supported by records and by removing tooth structure that was excessive in several teeth”;
• billed for treatment when the need for the treatment was not supported by records;
• provided treatment without having “sufficiently obtained or documented valid informed consent”;
• failed to maintain adequate patient records; and
• breached a 2020 consent order by failing to complete the “ethics-based PROBE Plus course.”
Nawrot was suspended for nine months in 2020 and ordered to pay a $30,000 fine after the college determined he committed professional misconduct for treatments that were “unnecessary, excessive, inappropriate and/or not supported by a diagnosis.”
He was also required to complete “extensive remedial education.”
The college posted on its website that the most recent investigation was related to two patient complaints.
In addition to his suspension and fine, Nawrot is required to complete the college’s Avoiding Complaints Course and the PROBE Plus course (or another program approved by the college).
