RCMP and emergency health services were called Thursday night to a violent incident near the downtown Chilliwack post office, for a man bleeding from a head injury.

Police said it was believed to be a targeted incident.

"I can confirm there is no risk to the public at this time as police believe this to be an isolated and targeted incident," said Chilliwack RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Carmen Kiener.

The victim was transported to hospital with serious injuries from the assault with a weapon but is expected to survive, police say.

"Police are working diligently to advance the investigation."
